24 network bits · 8 host bits

Host capacity excludes the network and broadcast addresses. It does not check availability, reachability, reserved ranges or provider-specific reservations.

QUICK REFERENCE

Understand your results

CIDR & subnet masks

The prefix tells you how many of the 32 bits belong to the network. A /24 is the same mask as 255.255.255.0, with 256 total addresses.

Network & host addresses

For a typical subnet, the first address identifies the network and the last is its broadcast address. The addresses between them form the conventional host range.

Special prefixes

A /31 provides two point-to-point endpoints. A /32 identifies one address. A /0 covers all IPv4 address space and is used for a default route.

Technical references: CIDR (RFC 4632) and /31 links (RFC 3021).
